At NAMI Spokane, we know that one caring person can make an extraordinary difference in someone’s life—especially when that person has the right tools. That’s why we’re excited to begin hosting QPR Suicide Prevention Trainings at our office.
But what exactly is QPR, and why is it so important?
QPR: Three Simple Steps That Save Lives
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer.
It’s a research-based, skills-building training designed to help everyday people recognize the warning signs of suicide and respond with confidence and compassion.
Think of QPR as similar to CPR—but for mental health emergencies.
Just as CPR helps you keep someone alive until professional medical help arrives, QPR helps you support someone in emotional crisis until they can connect with the help they need.
How QPR Works
The QPR model teaches three essential skills:
- Question
Learn how to recognize the signs that someone may be struggling with suicidal thoughts—and how to ask them directly, clearly, and safely about what they’re experiencing.
- Persuade
Discover how to offer hope, listen without judgment, and encourage the person to consider accepting help.
- Refer
Understand how to connect someone to the right supports—whether that’s a crisis line, a mental health professional, or trusted community resources.
These steps are simple to learn but incredibly powerful. The goal is not for you to become a counselor—just a compassionate, informed gatekeeper who can help someone stay safe.
Who Is QPR For?
Everyone.
Teachers, parents, neighbors, co-workers, faith leaders, teens, retirees—anyone who interacts with people (which is all of us!) can benefit from this training.
You don’t need mental health experience. You just need a willingness to learn, care, and be present for others.
Why QPR Matters
Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the United States, and many people who struggle never tell anyone directly. But the warning signs are often there—and when someone notices and responds early, lives can be saved.
QPR empowers individuals and communities to:
- Recognize signs of crisis sooner
- Break stigma by having open, direct conversations about suicide
- Offer meaningful support when it matters most
- Help people connect to life-saving resources
At NAMI Spokane, we believe that suicide prevention is a shared responsibility. QPR gives all of us a practical way to help.
QPR at NAMI Spokane
Beginning January 2026, NAMI Spokane will offer QPR trainings at our office, making it easier for community members to participate in this important learning opportunity.
Our goal is to help Spokane become a place where no one struggles alone—and where more people feel equipped to step in when someone is hurting.
It will be held the first Wednesday of each month 6:30-8:00pm at our office. Open and FREE to anyone in the community.
You Can Help Save a Life
Sometimes the most important step is simply showing up.
QPR gives you the tools. Compassion gives you the courage.
Together, we can build a safer, more connected Spokane.
